Abstract
Purpose: This research is to understand a type of near-horizontal phoria for Multifocal lenses customers and investigate a change of near-horizontal phoria after wearing Multifocal lenses. The results may suggest an appropriate prescription for Multifocal lenses by near-horizontal phoria type.
Method: Forty Multifocal lenses customers, aged 40-year-old to 80 years, were divided into two groups and each group was made up of 20 exophoria and esophoria. The two groups were divided into three groups which addition is +0.75~+1.25 D for Group1, +1.50~+2.00 D for Group2 and +2.25~+2.75 D for Group3. It was investigated to verify the statistical relatives for change of near-horizontal phoria by wearing Multifocal lenses.
Results: The Average of near-horizontal phoria in exophoria group before and after prescription for the Multifocal lenses was 4.4¡¾1.23 BI and 6.7¡¾1.26 BI respectively. Difference of the average was 2.3¡¾0.47 BI and it was slightly increased(p< 0.05). On the other hand, each average of nearhorizontal phoria in esophoria group before and after prescription for the Multifocal lenses was 4.05¡¾1.05 BO and 1.8¡¾1.28 BO. Difference of the average was 2.25¡¾0.55 BO and it was slightly
decreased (p< 0.05).
Conclusion: The results indicate that prescription of addition makes increase and decrease the near-horizontal phoria value of exophoria and esophoria respectively. It demonstrates that wearing Multifocal lenses for esophoria is more adaptable than exophoria.
